My name is Barbara De Girolamo. I was born in Rome, Italy. I am a 44 years old full time mum.
I started sculpting 4 years ago during a little break from creating sugar and sugar paste flowers.
This journey began as an OOAK doll collector. Although my collection is not complete, I feel very lucky to own dolls made by some of the best artists from around the world. That is to say I admire a lot of my colleagues.
I felt totally captured by this art and my interest in sculpting started to grow day by day.
The more I learned from this art the more I became keen on it.
This kind of art is not very well known in Italy, however there are great OOAK Italian doll artists with whom I formed a great friendship, thanks to our common interest.
When I’m working on a piece I give my main priority to the making of the eyes. I use a handmade painted glass cabochon, and this procedure could take a lot of time. Starting from the research of this little scale cabochon to
finally ending up with a detailed painted eye. The painting process of the eyes; giving them the different pigments and shades that real eyes have, I confess that this is the most frustrating process! From the 20 or 30 eyes that I make, only two or three pairs will be good enough to use, the rest has to be thrown away. I hope to improve this skill soon.
When I sculpt, I get lost in time, and feel completely transported in the magical dimension of sculpting that I enjoy so much.
Through sculpting the clay I can turn my Dreams into Reality.
Since the beginning of my sculpting venture, I have entered some of my artdolls in contests. And I am happy to say, my work has been awarded. This gives me great satisfaction because it is the strength I need to continue improving in this wonderful creative path. People’s approval is my best Reward.
